EDC approves cancer‑aid sponsorship, two mini‑grants and several denials

San Juan — The Sawhorn Economic Development Corporation approved several sponsorships and mini grants and also denied multiple applications after discussing eligibility and ownership questions.
Evelyn Sines, executive director of the Renaissance Cancer Foundation, asked the board to consider a municipal sponsorship for the foundation's Nov. 16 gala, saying the organization provided "more than $263,000 to patients" in 2023 and that about $20,000 of that assistance went to San Juan residents. A board member moved to donate $2,000 in sponsorship funds; the motion was seconded and the chair declared the motion carried.
Separately, the board approved a $2,000 mini grant for Nova Extreme LLC after owner Jose Zepeda described how nearby parking changes and lost lessees had affected his family's businesses; Zepeda said the alley access to a rear parking area was threatened, which could reduce customer access. "We have a lot of parking spaces there, but we are being threatened that they're gonna take away that alleyway," he said.
The board also discussed a sponsorship request for the PSJA Early College High School Bears baseball program; after taking the matter into executive session the board reconvened and approved a $500 sponsorship.
Conversely, the board denied the mini‑grant request for the Sphere Event Center Party Room and moved to deny the application for Techniq/Techn Heat Color, citing ownership and eligibility questions; staff directed applicants to provide clearer ownership documentation and reapply where appropriate. In at least one case staff and board members noted that the municipal program allows one grant per legal entity and applicants representing multiple LLCs should provide supporting documentation to seek separate awards.
Minutes for August 6 and August 20, 2024, were placed on consent and approved. Several executive session items concerning economic development prospects (identified in the meeting as Project Berger, Project Gore, Project Bear and Project Ken) were discussed in closed session and the board voted in open session to "proceed as discussed in executive session," without disclosing terms.
