Council approves seven‑year maintenance contract for city radio system

The Copperas Cove City Council on Oct. 1 authorized the city manager to execute a professional‑services maintenance agreement with Daily Wells Communications Inc. for the city’s P25 radio system, approving a seven‑year pricing option that staff said smooths out future cost increases.
Fire Chief Gary Young told the council the new radio system’s manufacturer warranty has expired and that the ongoing maintenance cost exceeds the amount budgeted this year. “We’re short about $60,000,” he said, and staff recommended the seven‑year option that spreads increases more steadily rather than triannual surges.
Staff also asked Daily Wells to clarify responsibilities around outage response and included that clarification as Revision 3 in the contract. Gary Young said the vendor has historically supported the city and provided the requested contractual detail.
The motion to approve the seven‑year maintenance agreement was made by Joanne Cortland and seconded by Vanya Hart; council voted in favor and the motion carried.
The council adopted a related budget amendment later in the meeting to incorporate the additional maintenance cost into FY2024–25 (see separate item on the adopted budget amendment).
