The City of Farmers Branch Arts and Culture Committee voted on Nov. 13 to establish five subcommittees to carry out its 2024–25 plan of work, the committee’s presiding member announced at the meeting.
The committee approved a motion by Speaker 7 to form the subcommittees, which was seconded and carried after members voiced assent. Speaker 5, who chaired the meeting, said the committees will be: artist outreach; arts and cultural festivals; arts and culture and public spaces; sister cities; and strategic planning. The committee also agreed a subcommittee may include no more than three committee members to avoid forming a quorum under the Open Meetings Act.
Why it matters: establishing subcommittees is intended to distribute responsibility for the committee’s yearlong goals — including public‑art projects, festivals and inventorying city‑owned artwork — and to create smaller working groups that can develop actionable plans before returning recommendations to the full committee or City Council.
Committee members agreed the subcommittees should set their own measurable goals after membership is finalized. Speaker 8 explained she consolidated members’ submitted preferences into the five proposed groups and asked members to review the draft and indicate where they prefer to serve at the next meeting. Multiple members said they wanted to limit the number of committees on which an individual serves to keep work manageable.
The committee noted one multicultural subcommittee nomination came from City Council and that members may hold a December special session to nominate and finalize that subcommittee’s membership, because the global multicultural event is scheduled for March and requires timely planning. The chair said the committee will put subcommittee membership and volunteers on a future agenda for final approval.
What’s next: the committee directed members to review the draft plan and return with preferred assignments; staff will post a map and materials when available and the full committee will finalize membership at an upcoming meeting or special session.
