Farmers Branch highlights compost survey, irrigation rebate and water-conservation efforts

At the March 13 meeting, staff reviewed local outreach and conservation programs including a compost survey and an irrigation checkup rebate.
Staff reported 213 survey responses: 76% of respondents reported disposing of food waste in the trash, 18% compost at home, and 4% use the Citizens Collection Center. Staff said the responses will inform Earth Day marketing to encourage backyard composting and use of the collection center.
On water efforts, staff said forms for an irrigation checkup rebate are prepared (online and translated PDFs), funding has been allocated, and the materials are awaiting city manager approval before launch. Staff also described ongoing work toward installing advanced metering infrastructure (AMI) and potential leak-detection applications for city buildings.
Committee members and residents raised multiple local water issues: persistent wet spots and possible distribution leaks near meters and alleyways. Staff offered to connect residents with the water department and suggested inviting water-department staff to a future meeting to explain responsibilities and repair protocols.
