Farmers Branch authorized the purchase of three pieces of fire apparatus to update the city’s aging fleet.
Deputy Director Catherine Lee presented Resolution 2024-173 seeking approval to buy two 2028 Pierce Custom Velocity pumpers and one 2028 Pierce Custom Velocity 105-foot aerial ladder through a Texas cooperative. The agenda amount listed $3,677,627; Lee and staff later described the total cost rounded to $3.7 million, noting $587,000 in savings from prepaying and a trade-in allowance of about $161,000.
Fire Chief Daniel Admer said the apparatuses carry approximately 500 gallons of water each and that the aerial ladder extends 105 feet (approximately 10 stories). He explained the typical four-year lead time and the process for training, transferring equipment and trading in old units.
Council members asked about trade-in valuation, parts commonality and operational impact; staff said common platforms reduce parts inventory and ease maintenance. The council approved the resolution by show of hands.
Procurement will proceed according to the cooperative contract and the fleet replacement schedule presented to council.
