Board OKs two-student trip to Oklahoma welding contest; trustees recognize campus staff and students

The New Caney Independent School District Board on Oct. 21 approved a request for two senior practicum welding students to attend the Big River Build Off in Ardmore, Oklahoma, on Nov. 6–7. Jonathan Powell presented the request and said the competition is roughly 30 miles north of the Texas border; students will build a metal picnic table, compete for scholarship awards and meet representatives from trade schools. The motion to approve the out-of-state trip was made by a trustee identified as Elizabeth and seconded by Ms. Trout; the board voted to approve the trip.
Earlier in the meeting Superintendent Calvert and campus leaders recognized multiple employees and students across campuses. At Dogwood Elementary, cafeteria employee Nellie Shriner Olvera (23 years of district service), custodian Alejandra Vargas (8 years), teacher Catherine Bayless (19 years) and paraprofessional Marissa Martinez (about 19 years) were honored, plus fifth-grader John Renteria for academic and extracurricular contributions. Presenters from New Caney Elementary likewise recognized staff including Mariana Alvarado, Nancy Cardenas, Emma Carino and Natalia Spivey and highlighted fifth-grader Uriel Campos Reyes.
Those recognitions were presented during the superintendent’s report and were ceremonial acknowledgments of staff and student contributions; no formal board actions were required.
