Perryton ISD discusses bus leasing, costly repairs and immediate need for a maintenance pickup

PERRYTON ' The Perryton ISD board heard an extended transportation report that outlined fleet needs, repair work and options the district is weighing to maintain student transportation.
Mister Felix, who presented the transportation update, said the district has used a local college mechanics partnership to address some repairs and confirmed one 16-passenger bus recently was repaired and returned to service. He told the board some route buses have more than 200,000 miles and that turbocharger repairs can cost on the order of $10,000 when they fail.
Board members discussed lease-to-own options to increase fleet size over several years rather than buying a single bus outright; one presenter described lease terms that could span multiple years and allow the district to pay for several buses over time. Availability timelines vary by bus type: some standard yellow buses were expected in November while customized "white" activity buses require additional outfitting.
Trustees also emphasized an immediate, operational need: a three-quarter-ton, four-wheel-drive pickup to support the bus barn for on-site work, tire changes, jump-starts and hauling tools. "A pickup is a need," the Board President said during the discussion.
No final procurement decision was made at the meeting. The board asked staff to continue evaluating lease versus purchase costs, timelines and the practical needs for a service pickup and spare parts.
