Perryton ISD urges voters to back Proposition A, says tax rate will not rise

PERRYTON ' During its regular meeting, Perryton ISD leaders encouraged the community to vote on Proposition A, which the superintendent said would not change the district's tax rate but would increase local maintenance and operations revenue.
"The proposition on the agenda is not a tax increase," Superintendent Brown said, urging residents to use early voting. He explained that, under the way state school finance works, shifting local pennies into maintenance and operations triggers additional state matching dollars and that the district expects passage to generate about $1,000,000 for staff raises and bus purchases. "The tax rate for the school will be a dollar and 2¢ no matter if Proposition A passes or fails," Brown said.
Board members discussed mechanics of state funding, noting the district seeks to use the additional revenue to address teacher pay and operational needs without increasing the nominal tax rate. Officials cautioned that property valuations are set externally and do affect individual tax bills, but they emphasized the ballot language does not change the district's tax rate.
The superintendent also noted the first day of early voting had strong turnout. The board did not take a formal vote on the proposition at the meeting; the election proceeds under normal early voting and election procedures.
