Plainview student Montana Moore named National Merit semifinalist; board honors him

The Plainview ISD board recognized senior Montana Moore on Sept. 23 after he was named a 2025 National Merit Scholarship semifinalist.
Board members and administrators described the semifinalist honor, explaining it comes from the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test and places Moore among the top scorers in the state. A district presenter said semifinalists "represent less than 1% of U.S. high school juniors" and outlined the finalist application requirements, including academic record, extracurricular participation and an essay.
Moore, who the district noted is a senior at PCHS, told the board he has applied to several colleges and is aiming for Massachusetts Institute of Technology. "I have not yet submitted my application, but my dream school is MIT because I am wanting to go into computer science and engineering," he said. He also said he has been accepted to Wayland, Angelo State, Texas Tech and A&M and that he has been admitted into honors/engineering programs at Texas Tech and A&M.
Administrators highlighted Moore's extracurricular contributions, including his extensive volunteer work with the College Heights Food Pantry. The board invited Moore and his family to the front for a photo and applauded his achievements. Moore will be notified if he advances from semifinalist to finalist in February.
The district said it will continue to document and celebrate student achievements at future meetings.
