Chief Judge Toft administered oaths of office at a 9:00 a.m. ceremony in Woodbury County, installing three newly elected members of the Board of Supervisors, Michelle Scaff as county auditor-recorder and Chad Sheehan as sheriff.
Matthew Young, chairman of the Board of Supervisors, opened the ceremony, saying, “My name is Matthew Young, chairman of the board of supervisors,” and introducing Chief Judge Toft to conduct the swearing-in.
“It’s my privilege today to administer the oaths of office to the new, members of the board of supervisors, our new County Auditor and to Sheriff Sheehan,” Judge Toft said before beginning the oath sequences. Each official repeated the oath to “support the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of Iowa” and to “faithfully and impartially” discharge the duties of their offices in Woodbury County.
The transcript records the judge naming the first supervisor as Kent Carper, while the oath text recorded in the ceremony reads “I Kent T. Harper” during the repeat-after-me sequence; the transcript contains both renderings. David Dietrich and Mark Nelson were sworn in in separate oath sequences, and Michelle Scaff repeated the auditor-recorder oath before Chad Sheehan was sworn in as sheriff. Scaff said, “I, Michelle Scaff, do solemnly swear,” and Sheehan said, “I, Chad Sheehan, solemnly swear,” as part of the repeat-after-me oaths.
Chairman Young noted logistical details for the morning: there were about 15 minutes before the regularly scheduled 9:30 a.m. board meeting, and he said the newly sworn supervisors will take their seats on Jan. 2 for the board’s first meeting of the year. He also invited guests to take photographs and mentioned a 10:30 a.m. dedication upstairs.
No formal motions or votes were part of the ceremony; the event was ceremonial and procedural, concluding with congratulations from the judge and attendees.
The Board is scheduled to begin regular business at 9:30 a.m.; the newly sworn supervisors’ official seating is set for Jan. 2.
