Hempstead Board approves parking rules, traffic changes and two land‑use exceptions

The Town of Hempstead Town Board on Nov. 18 unanimously adopted a suite of local laws tightening parking and traffic rules across several communities and approved two land‑use special exceptions, the board said at its meeting.
Board members closed public hearings and approved rules limiting parking in Uniondale and West Hempstead and additional parking/standing prohibitions affecting Elmont, Levittown, Roosevelt, Uniondale, areas near Valley Stream and Woodmere. The board also adopted changes to arterial stop locations in Elmont, Levittown, near Valley Stream and West Hempstead, and approved designated handicap parking on public streets in Merrick and Uniondale. Each item was put forward, seconded and carried with recorded 'Aye' votes from Supervisor Ferretti, Councilman Dunne, Deputy Supervisor Goosby, Councilwoman Miller, Councilman Muscarella, Councilwoman Ryder and Councilman Schneider.
On the decision calendar the board classified an Island Park application as an unlisted action under the Town of Hempstead Building Zone Ordinance §196‑n and adopted a negative declaration under the New York State Environmental Quality Review Act (SEQRA). The board then approved the application of 1146 Bayport Corporation for a special exception under §196‑n to permit a public garage (motor vehicle repair shop) and accessory office at a property in Island Park.
Votes on the items were recorded during the meeting with the board registering unanimous support. No substantive public opposition to those specific agenda items was recorded during the hearings.
The board moved the administrative calendar (items 7–64) forward after adjourning two items for later review; the formal meeting was then adjourned and the board remained for additional resident comment.
