Jefferson County secures $375,000 in state aid for courthouse repairs; board to match with county funds

County staff and lobbyist John Costello briefed the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners on Aug. 7 about the funding package the county secured for courthouse repairs.
John Costello of Capital Strategy Group told the board the county had pursued roughly $1.213 million in state funding and "we successfully were able to get $375,000," money that staff said would be combined with $300,000 already committed by the county and additional investment earnings to cover immediate repair work.
County staff outlined options for using interest earnings from county investments as a local match. The clerk reported there is roughly $350,000 available in invested interest (conservative estimate) and suggested directing a portion of those funds to bring the project total to about $855,000 to cover roof repairs, sealing the building envelope, and courtroom ceiling work. Staff advised holding back a modest reserve (roughly 20 percent of requested match) to preserve capacity for pursuing continuation funding in the next legislative cycle.
Commissioners discussed whether to spend the available investment interest now or reserve part of it for matching a follow-up request next year. After discussion, Commissioner Paul moved (seconded by Commissioner Searle) to approve a resolution memorializing appreciation for the delegation and to authorize staff to finalize grant paperwork and identify the county matching amount; the board voted in favor.
The resolution and motion do not finalize construction contracts. Staff said the grant-agreement acceptance, details of the scope and contract awards, and the formal grant agreement would return to the board for final authorization.
Next steps: staff will finalize the grant agreement, present a recommended match amount and project scope, and return to the board with formal contract and appropriation requests.
