Kootenai County amends Nov. 4 canvass to add omitted write-in totals for Coeur d'Alene school trustee race

KOOTENAI COUNTY, Idaho — The Kootenai County Board of Commissioners on Nov. 18 approved an amendment to the Nov. 4, 2025 election canvass to include write-in totals that were inadvertently left off a state-generated report shown to the commissioners.
Asa Gray, elections director, told the board she had consulted with county legal counsel and the secretary of state's office and asked that the official canvass be amended. "I want to make clear first off that all of the public facing results that have been posted on our website that are still posted on our website and on the state site have not changed," Gray said.
Gray read the omitted numbers into the record for the Coeur d'Alene School District trustee Zone 4 contest: "There was 1 candidate on the ballot, Leslie Bjerke. She received 2,184 votes. We then had a write in line ... There were 317 votes cast on the write in line. Of those, 195 were for the write in candidate, Tom Sanner, and the remaining 122 were not for eligible candidates, so they are considered unassigned. That is a total of 2,501 votes cast ... and 699 undervotes," Gray said.
Gray emphasized the amendment corrects the administrative report and does not change the publicly posted outcome for the race. The board voted to approve the amendment after the director's presentation.
The record shows the elections director consulted legal counsel and the secretary of state's office before bringing the amendment to the board. Commissioners approved the amendment by voice vote during the Nov. 18 session.
