Liberty County Commissioners Court on Nov. 25 approved a sheriff's request to buy 50 LifePak CR2 automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to be placed at county facilities and in frontline vehicles, using Texas opioid-abatement funds.
Staff and a vendor representative told the court the package covers a 4-year battery life for pads and a manufacturer's 8-year warranty, includes pediatric and adult pads, web-based monitoring with alerts and GPS location for each unit, and eight years of program management at no additional charge. The cost read into the record for the purchase was $104,750.
Commissioners asked about training and liability. Vendor and staff said the device provides guided step-by-step instructions when opened and that they have previously coordinated training with the fire department; the county said the device vendor can provide demonstrations and the county's chief deputy will test monitoring features. A commissioner cited Texas's Good Samaritan protections as reducing liability concerns for lay rescuers using AEDs.
The court moved to approve the purchase; a motion and second were recorded and the vote carried on a voice vote.
The equipment will be distributed to sheriff's offices and frontline vehicles; staff said the county will monitor unit status via the vendor's web portal and schedule training as needed.
