The Torrington City Council voted on Nov. 18 to move the city’s Christmas Eve holiday to Dec. 26 for this year, a change brought forward by city staff at employees’ request and approved by the wage committee.
Clerk Treasurer Strecker told council the committee considered the change and recommended it move forward; she said the county is doing the same and described scheduling implications. Strecker said the police department’s shift schedules mean the change will likely cost the department roughly $3,500 in additional holiday pay, because some staff are already scheduled and must be paid holiday rates.
Councilman Lehi moved to approve the change with a proviso protecting employees who had already been scheduled for holiday pay; councilors clarified that exempted staff and departments (police, EMS) would retain prior holiday pay arrangements. After clarification the motion passed by voice vote with no nays.
Strecker said the city has changed holiday dates in past years and departments will manage vacation approvals to maintain coverage.
