Forsyth County approves larger signs for major parks to improve wayfinding

Dan Roberts of Planning and Zoning Services told the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners that a proposed amendment (UDO CC 30) would allow parks and recreation areas of 100 acres or more to have freestanding signs up to 75 square feet, expanding an existing rule that applied only to parks larger than 1,000 acres. Roberts said the county’s new agricultural-recreation park north of Tobacco spans more than 200 acres and that an 18-square-foot sign allowed in RS‑20 zoning would not be sufficient for visitors to find the entrance.
The planning staff recommended the change and the planning board voted unanimously to recommend approval after a 10/09/2025 public hearing with no speakers in opposition, Roberts said. Commissioners asked whether the proposal dealt with sign size, illumination, or aesthetics; staff clarified the change targets size for directional safety and visibility, not internally illuminated signage in the district.
A commissioner moved to approve the amendment with clarifications provided previously; Vice Chair Whisenhunt seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
