Education report: Denny Oatley Festival, archery ranges expand cultural programming

Acting Education Director Aaron Emerton told the committee that the Denny Oatley Festival recently drew about 250 students and that the education department is expanding archery-range programming across the Nation.
"We had over 250 students up at our Denny Oatley Festival," Emerton said, describing participation from Cleora, Fairland, Miami and Bonita schools and saying staff and volunteers brought the site attendance to roughly 300 when including chaperones.
Emerton said archery ranges at Bonita, Sallisaw and Tahlequah remain open for community use and that programming includes traditional games, archery, marbles and language-class opportunities. He said visiting superintendents praised the events and that the department will continue programming through the year.
Emerton also reported the interview process for the 2026 selection team concluded with 37 interviews and that the applicant pool balanced mentors and youth writers; he said selections were close and staff expected to finalize choices soon.
Committee members thanked staff and had no additional questions.
