The Norwalk City Economic and Community Development Committee on Dec. 3 voted to authorize the mayor to execute any and all documents required by the Connecticut Department of Transportation to accept $800,000 in grant funding under the Community Connectivity Grant Program for Wall Street corridor improvements.
Nel, a traffic analyst, said the award will continue the Phase 1 construction of pedestrian improvements, street lighting and streetscape upgrades between Main Street and Brook Street and carry those improvements up to East Avenue near the park. The package includes the city’s first Wall Street gateway arch, a community‑voted design element, and staff said a public meeting will be organized as part of the project.
"We got awarded in full $800,000," Nel said. Council members praised the award as a significant investment in a neighborhood that has been awaiting improvements for decades and thanked department staff for securing the grant.
The committee approved the authorization unanimously. Staff said the project will proceed through design and construction phases, with public engagement to follow.
