The Land Use and Building Management Committee voted Dec. 3 to refer to the full Common Council a request authorizing the mayor to execute an agreement with Hertz Furniture Systems LLC to replace student lockers at Nathan Hale Middle School and Ponus Ridge STEAM Academy for a total not to exceed $460,000, with up to $46,000 in contract change orders.
Bill from the Norwalk Public Schools facilities department told the committee that Hertz was the low bidder and had completed a similar locker replacement project last year. He said the work will replace older 8‑inch lockers with 12‑inch—and in some locations 15‑inch—units to improve student storage and usability, and that some additional wall space and distributed locker assignments were used to accommodate the larger units. "They did a fantastic job," Bill said of the contractor's prior work.
Committee members asked about scheduling and whether all work would be completed in a single summer; staff said the work will be phased and not all schools will be completed in one summer. The committee voted unanimously to send the authorization to the full Common Council for final approval.
The request before the council will ask the Common Council to authorize Mayor Harry W. Rilling to execute the contract and permit the NPS facilities department to approve change orders up to the stated limit.
