Halifax school board names new high school auditorium for James E. Edmunds II

The Halifax County School Board voted Dec. 2 to name the new Halifax County High School auditorium the James E. Edmunds II Auditorium.

Board member (mover) brought the naming proposal forward during the recognition portion of the meeting and a colleague seconded the motion. During discussion, one trustee, Miss Chopper, said she objected to the board unilaterally naming public facilities and urged community input and adherence to board policy. The motion was put to a voice vote; the chair called for ayes and one trustee voiced opposition. The motion passed.

Superintendent Dr. Huskin thanked board members and community supporters, linking the facility to the county's 1% sales-tax funding and the division's long-term planning. At the meeting the superintendent read a dedication statement, saying in part, "In honor of James E. Edmunds II, this auditorium is dedicated in recognition of your unwavering leadership, steadfast commitment, and the passionate belief in the power of public education." The board recorded the dedication date as Dec. 2, 2025.

The board did not record a roll-call tally in the minutes presented at the meeting; the vote was decided by voice. A trustee raised concerns about following any applicable naming policy and about giving residents a formal opportunity to comment; the board did not schedule a separate public-input process at the meeting.

Next steps: the board presented a plaque and invited Mr. Edmunds and his family to accept the dedication. No additional procedural steps were announced on the record.
