Student board member reports success of general assembly, proposes monthly student board

The student member of the Allegany County Board of Education reported on student engagement efforts and proposed a standing 'student board' to elevate student concerns.
Miss Israel said an earlier general assembly had more than 160 students and that all eight schools were represented. She said the second general assembly is planned for Dec. 9 with a snow date of Dec. 11. She described a proposed student-board model in which student council officers would hold monthly sessions during lunch to collect student feedback, which the student board member would then compile and present to the board: "The student board is a group of student council officers who would take their time during lunch to listen to the students' concerns... and after the meeting, the student council officers will review the questions, send them to me, the student member of the board, who will try to find the best solution."
The board welcomed the report and praised the student involvement; members said they were encouraged by the turnout and thoughtful student questions at the assemblies.
