Huron district reports steady growth; some schools identified for targeted support
Summary
Board presentation showed district growth above state averages in multiple grades and subjects, highlighted targeted-improvement status for some centers, and gave graduation and ACT figures: on-time graduation 82%, completion 89%, ACT average 21.
The Huron School District reported measurable academic gains across multiple schools at the Nov. 24 Board of Education meeting, while noting some centers remain on targeted improvement plans.
District report-card presenter Miss Peetz told the board that Buchanan K–1 was identified for targeted school improvement after the state included K–1 scores for the first time; she said 52% of English learners at Buchanan are on track. Madison 2–3 is in its second year of targeted support with identified gaps in ELA and math and will use a Science of Reading grant to set improvement goals. "We were identified last year for targeted school improvement... One of the things that we're working on is greater attendance," Peetz said.
Peetz highlighted growth at Washington School, which she said outpaced the state three-year growth averages: English language arts growth 62% versus a state average of 56%, and mathematics growth 57% versus the state 51%. The district as a whole showed growth averages roughly 4 percentage points ahead of the state in both ELA and math, she said. High school on-time graduation was reported at 82% and the completion rate at 89%; the district ACT average was 21, matching the state average.
Board members praised teachers and staff for the progress and asked follow-up questions about spreading practices across schools and use of interim tests aligned to state assessments. Presenters said interim assessments and data review are being used to target curriculum gaps and guide instructional adjustments.
The board did not take policy action on the report; staff are expected to return with updates as improvement plans continue.
