Elko County educators present 'Portrait of a Learner' and outline next steps for classroom integration

Elko County School District officials and members of a district development committee on the Portrait of a Learner presented a districtwide learner profile they say will guide instruction and decision-making.
Committee members said the profile — built with input from ‘‘around 60 to 80’’ community members plus hundreds of additional respondents via surveys — defines the knowledge, skills and dispositions the district wants students to develop. A presenter described it as a “North Star” that will guide every decision about curriculum and programming and said the next step is to create learning progressions and implementation teams made up mostly of teachers.
Student board member Haley Warren told trustees she could see the competencies being taught across existing clubs and classes and asked how the competencies would be brought to students; committee members said teacher teams will start meeting in February to develop the progressions that embed the learner competencies across grade levels.
Superintendent CJ Anderson and trustees praised the inclusive process and urged the community to continue engagement as the district moves from profile to classroom practice. According to presenters, the district will return learning progressions to the board for review after the teacher working groups complete their work.
What happens next: the district will convene teacher teams to draft learning progressions, with presenters expecting those drafts to return to the board in a later meeting for review and approval.
