The Atherton Town Council voted to adopt transportation-committee and staff recommendations on temporary speed humps and traffic-calming measures after reviewing neighborhood survey results.
Public works staff reported the committee recommended removing a majority of temporary speed-hump installations on several streets (notably Selby and Stockbridge), retaining others (Maple, Monte Vista, Linda Vista, Fairview) and making modifications at locations such as Glenwood and Watkins. Staff emphasized coordination with the Menlo Park Fire Protection District and outreach to affected neighbors and schools before making location adjustments.
Staff described differences between temporary and permanent humps, noting permanent asphalt installations offer more design flexibility; temporary modular devices are off-the-shelf units with limited ramping options and can be noisy when heavy vehicles traverse them. Staff also recommended adding reflectors and vertical delineators to improve night visibility and suggested targeted spacing and design adjustments on collector streets.
A council member moved to accept the recommendations as outlined in the staff report; a second was recorded and the motion passed by voice vote. Staff said resource constraints make immediate full implementation unlikely and that removals and outreach would start in the new year.
