Lamar council approves first reading to rezone Dogwood Industrial Park to B-2

The Lamar City Council on Nov. 18 approved the first reading of Ordinance No. 1,000 to rezone Dogwood Industrial Park from I-2 (Industrial Business District) to B-2 (General Business District).

The hearing was opened after the council and the Administration and Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval. A council member moved to approve the ordinance’s first reading; the motion was seconded and passed in a roll-call vote.

A person identified in the discussion as Steve addressed the council and said he currently has "no plans or anything" and "haven't even put a for sale sign up there," but that he wanted the zoning changed to make it easier to market and pursue future business uses. "I've had a couple calls on it, but nothing real major," he said.

Council members noted the change is intended to expand allowable commercial uses and make the property easier to market. The motion carried on roll call; the recorded affirmatives in the meeting record were Brens (recorded as "Yes" during the vote), Pick, Beto, Wick and Sturgeon. The chair declared the motion carried.

What the change allows: Rezoning from I-2 to B-2 would permit a broader set of general business activities on the property, rather than restricting uses to heavier industrial operations. The Administration and Planning and Zoning Commission recommended the first reading after their review; the council completed only the first reading action on Nov. 18, meaning further consideration or a second reading would be required for final adoption.
