Muskego City’s finance committee on Dec. 2 voted to authorize recruitment to fill the conservation coordinator / city forester position ahead of an upcoming retirement.
City staff told the committee the position has been held ‘‘for the past 27 years’’ by the current forester and oversees 28 conservation sites covering nearly 500 acres. Staff said the job description was updated to add more administrative responsibilities, grant-writing and marketing tasks ‘‘to try to get more funding’’ in addition to existing municipal funding.
Alderman Schrader asked whether the city’s work would overlap with Waukesha County’s responsibilities for wetlands and county-managed lands. Tom Zakers, the departing forester, replied that Waukesha County ‘‘would only deal with lands that are under their jurisdiction’’ and would not manage Muskego City properties.
The committee moved and seconded the resolution to authorize filling the position and approved it by voice vote. No salary, posting timeline or finalist names were discussed on the record at this meeting.
Next steps: the authorization allows staff to post and begin recruitment; the committee did not record further procedural steps or an effective hire date during this session.
