Parents ask about renovations, volunteer rules and reregistration as board approves facilities slate

At the Middlesex Borough School District meeting, several parents asked detailed questions about planned facilities work, volunteer policies and reregistration.
Resident Laura Thomas asked whether the district’s plan included placing a trailer in the schoolyard or renovating interior space to create room. Administrators said soil and engineering studies showed placing a trailer in the back field would be more expensive, so the architect recommended interior reconfiguration as the less expensive option. Thomas also asked whether the district intended to replace the entire roof; administrators said the recommendation was to replace a front roof section and the soffit together because of an active leak, and that soffit replacement funding was included in the current budget.
Thomas and others also read and questioned board policy 9180 (school volunteers) after an online PTO volunteer sign-up returned a denial; administrators said PTO volunteer lists are a separate entity from district-managed volunteers, and that PTOs may run their own volunteer processes. On reregistration, administrators said there were four students with incomplete paperwork at the time of the prior meeting and that staff continue to work with families, including providing language interpreters when required.
The board approved facilities and finance items 14.01–14.09 during the meeting; one member abstained on item 14.1 because she was on the bills list.
What’s next: Administration will supply requested reregistration and lunch-arrears numbers to the public commenter and continue coordination on planned facilities work.
