Jefferson County homeschool group seeks permission to operate jail museum tours; staff to review liability and logistics

Members of the Jefferson County Homeschoolers, represented by Tammy Brogan and Corey Watts, asked the board for permission to operate public tours of the county’s old jail museum (supervisor-of-elections space), staffed by students on weekend hours. They proposed donation-based tips for student guides and occasional private, paid tours to support student participants.
County counsel and staff flagged questions about liability, insurance coverage, building condition and appropriate access. Counsel recommended legal review and that staff work with the association on an agreement and bring proposed terms back to the board. Commissioners asked about possible rent or consideration and whether the county’s property insurance would permit public access. The board directed staff to explore the proposal with counsel and the group, and to return with details for further consideration.
