Jefferson County library director to depart; staff praise her 16 years of service

Jefferson County officials announced that library director Natalie Bender will leave her position after 16 years of service. Commissioners, staff and residents praised Bender’s contributions to library services, her role in emergency-response operations during storms and her pandemic-era efforts to connect residents to telehealth and communication resources.
Staff announced David Wheeler passed the mosquito-control test and is on track to become a full director of that program. Bender told the board she is moving to Fort Myers/Pine Island to take over an archival/administration role and named Doris as interim director; she said Jordan Bryan and other long-time staff will continue library operations.
Commissioners and several residents thanked Bender for her leadership; one resident said she relied on the library to learn basic computer skills. The board said it will begin a search for a new library director and expressed appreciation for Bender’s willingness to be available for consultation during the transition.
