South River board: graduation rate climbs to 92.7%; superintendent outlines AV, communications and stadium upgrades

South River Superintendent Dr. Sylvia Zertjes told the Board of Education on Nov. 17 that the district has completed significant audiovisual upgrades at the high school auditorium and cafetoriums and is adding a modular press box at Denny Stadium with live-stream streaming capability to improve coverage of games and district events.
"We have all recently received significant upgrades in audio visual equipment," Dr. Zertjes said, adding the systems will be used for instruction, assemblies, parent sessions and community facility use. She also described plans to explore a unified communications system so teachers, coaches and district staff use consistent channels for district messages rather than separate third-party apps.
Doctor Trevisano delivered the board’s required presentation of high-school graduation requirements and results, explaining the three state-recognized pathways for meeting the testing requirement: the New Jersey graduation proficiency assessment, the standardized-test pathway (ACT/SAT/ACCUPLACER/ASVAB) and a district-approved portfolio pathway. Trevisano said the district received updated state data and "we're actually at 92.7, so we increased," and that the district will update the posted report after the meeting.
Trevisano also told the board that two students were denied graduation this past year because they did not meet course requirements, and that no students were denied graduation solely for failing or not taking the testing requirement. Dr. Zertjes additionally noted there is one confirmed HIB (Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying) incident included on the agenda for board review (item 3.4).
The superintendent said budgets for the 2026–27 school year are in preliminary drafting; principals and department teams are preparing proposals and the district will adjust plans when state and federal aid figures are finalized. Community members were directed to Assistant Business Administrator Camilla Miyazio for budget questions. The superintendent said presentation materials and accountability documents will be posted to the district website after the meeting.
The board took no separate vote on the informational graduation presentation; it was provided as part of the public records required by state review processes.
