Board approves safety plans, discusses drills and emergency training

The Rice Lake Area School District board approved the second reading of school and district safety plans required for submission to the Wisconsin Department of Justice and heard updates from the district safety committee.
District staff explained that safety plans must be filed annually with the Department of Justice and include documentation of drills. The committee reported recent work on building drill reports, EpiPen restocking, clarification that state statute allows either vaccination or an authorized waiver/exemption for students, emergency communication procedures, and distribution of new doorstop signage. "We recommended that we review the Stop the Bleed training for staff," a presenter said during the update.
The committee also described a planned multi‑agency training drill on Monday, Dec. 22, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the middle school involving Rice Lake Fire, Rice Lake Police, EMS and other county resources; staff and community volunteers were invited to participate. Board members had no further questions and approved the safety plans by voice vote.
The board later approved related routine policies and exhibits in a separate motion, and staff said drill evaluations for Hilltop and Hagen elementaries will be included in annual submissions to the Department of Justice.
What’s next: staff will file the approved safety plans and continue coordination for the Dec. 22 training and future drill documentation.
