Selma Appearance Commission approves railings and related painting at 201 North Massey Street

The Town of Selma Appearance Commission voted to approve a certificate of appropriateness (COA) for exterior work at 201 North Massey Street after staff presented photos showing new front‑porch railings and black paint applied without prior review.

Historic preservation staff told the commission that Maranta Flipping LLC is the applicant and owner and that railings and paint had been installed during interior work without recognizing the building’s historic designation. Staff recommended the request was consistent with the historic district and entered the staff report and supporting documents into the record.

Commissioners discussed additional painted elements visible in the photos, including shutters and chimney trim. One commissioner asked whether the darker elements around the door and shutters were paint or shadow; staff said the elements appeared darker in the image. A commissioner requested that the motion be worded to clearly include the chimneys, windows and shutters in the scope of approval.

The commission then voted in favor of accepting testimony and evidence into the record and approved the COA for the railings. The commission approved a separate motion to include painting of the chimneys, shutters and door as part of the COA. The commission also authorized the chair to sign the COA and findings of fact when those documents become available.
