During the Oct. 13 meeting the WSB public policy correspondent provided an update on recent state and federal education policy items. He described draft LRB 5100, which would create a multi‑member council (one member from the Wisconsin Association of School Boards was referenced) and require the Department of Workforce Development to host an online portal with information to help parents and students navigate credit transfer and make post‑secondary enrollment decisions easier.
The correspondent said Assembly Bill 170 (which would address rehiring retired staff drawing annuities) was pulled from a vote and he had not yet obtained an explanation. He also summarized proposals that would change scholarship-selection processes for very small schools, new rules to allow scouts one day a year to recruit in schools and a requirement to allow military recruiters access to common areas. He noted several other bills under consideration related to school-lunch ingredients and abuse-education and parental-notification proposals.
He also said federal rules have removed E‑rate funding eligibility for school buses, which may affect student access to internet services on buses that previously relied on E‑rate–supported connectivity.
