St. Mary Parish honors special-education teachers Jennifer Washington and Misty Ross

St. Mary Parish — Two special-education teachers were honored at the Special Education Advisory Committee meeting on Dec. 1.
Jennifer Washington described 18 years in education and said she moved from paraeducator roles into teaching and now focuses on individualized instruction. "Every child learns in their own way," Washington said, describing a classroom approach that emphasizes patience, compassion and high expectations. Members and administrators in attendance praised her collaboration with families and colleagues.
Misty Ross, a self-contained special educator at Patterson High School, said her background in mental-health work led her to special education. "My start to education was kinda crazy. It was COVID... mental health is where I met the types of kids that I knew I was coming to serve," Ross said. SEAP members and the director commended Ross for supporting colleagues, welcoming observations and sharing classroom strategies.
Why it matters: The recognitions highlight district teachers who provide individualized instruction and collaborative support for students with disabilities and demonstrate the role SEAP plays in acknowledging school-based work that supports inclusive education.
What’s next: The committee presented plaques and asked honorees to introduce family and supporters in attendance; members were reminded to continue outreach so more parents can participate in SEAP.
