Commission endorses temporary speed-hump trials, moves school-timed one-way change to public hearing

The Revere City Traffic Commission on Nov. 20 agreed to move temporary traffic-calming trials for Rice Avenue and Lanton/Lantern Road to public hearing and directed staff to coordinate placement with the traffic working group and DPW.

Julie DeMorrow of Planning and Community Development said traffic counts on Rice Avenue showed roughly 9,200 vehicles across a 13-day study (about 900–950 vehicles per day) and that the 85th percentile speed was about "25.726 miles per hour," prompting a recommendation to test removable speed humps. Lanton/Lantern Road recorded a larger volume across the same study window — more than 20,000 vehicles in the 13-day period — and also met criteria for calming but will need careful siting because of driveways, poles and on-street parking.

Separately, commissioners discussed a Cary Avenue one-way removal request tied to access near Revere High School. Staff and commissioners noted residents currently may have to use the high school parking lot to reach their homes; members proposed limiting the one-way restriction by school arrival and dismissal times rather than permanently changing the street flow. The commission voted to move the Cary Avenue item to public hearing and asked staff to provide the actual arrival and dismissal times for Revere High School and Romney Marsh Academy so the ordinance can mirror school schedules.

What’s next: Traffic working group and DPW will prepare temporary speed-hump locations and timing data for public hearing; staff will obtain school bell times and return the Cary Avenue proposal with concrete hour windows for the one-way restriction.
