Rice Lake Area School District board recognizes students, approves routine business and moves to closed session

Rice Lake — The Rice Lake Area School District board convened at 6:00 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, recognized students from district schools and completed routine business before voting to move into a closed session to consider approval of closed minutes and an individual employee contract.
Assistant principal Mark Beissie introduced senior John, noting the student plans to enroll full time at Northwoods Technical College for a commercial driver's license program and has taken CTE welding courses and rigorous academic work. "It's my absolute pleasure to introduce to you ... John is a senior," Beissie said as the board and attendees applauded the recognition.
In other business the board approved the Sept. 8 minutes and a consent agenda that included three employment resignations and seven employment recommendations by voice vote. The board also adopted a proclamation recognizing Oct. 6–10, 2025, as Wisconsin School Board Week and approved a set of policies and exhibits on second reading after the Policy and Legislative Advocacy Committee returned the items with no recommended changes.
Phil Henkel, serving as the board's WASB policy correspondent, briefed members on current state and federal developments, including the status of Assembly Bill 196 (a proposal about renew annuitants) and federal debates over Title I and Title II funding. "Title 1 is the largest source of federal funding for K-twelve schools and, it's meant to direct local funding for low achieving children in schools with high levels of poverty," Henkel said during his update.
Student leaders Porter Corbin and Steve Winfield reported on Freshman First Day, homecoming activities — including an assembly, dress-up days, and a new bonfire after the soccer game — and community service plans such as an October "rake and run." Corbin said, "I'm Porter Corbin. I'm a junior class rep," and described student-led events intended to boost engagement across grade levels.
District administration reminded families of Rice Lake High School parent-teacher conferences on Thursday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. and announced high school musical performances of "Mamma Mia" Nov. 13–16; roughly 40 students are involved in the production.
The meeting concluded with a motion to convene in closed session under the Wisconsin statutes cited in the record to approve closed session minutes and to discuss an individual employee contract. The motion was seconded and passed on roll call; the board recessed into closed session.
