Revere councilor asks DPW to study advanced signage for speed bumps; motion placed on file

Councilor Angela Garrino (Ward 5) introduced a motion on Nov. 20 asking the mayor to request the Department of Public Works install advance signage and flashing lights ahead of speed bumps citywide and to have the Traffic Commission and DPW review existing locations for appropriate warning signs.
"Speed bumps are meant to calm the traffic and protect residents, but without clear advanced warnings, they can actually create safety hazards within the city," Garrino told the committee, arguing that inadequate advance signage causes abrupt braking and creates risks for pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers.
Committee members agreed the measure was intended to identify safety gaps but noted this committee received the item to obtain a financial impact statement. Members discussed referring the proposal to the Traffic Calming group and the Traffic Commission for feasibility and cost estimates. Multiple members reported existing petitions or traffic-calming requests related to speed bumps in some neighborhoods and suggested staff-level review would be appropriate.
The committee decided to place the motion on file and refer it to the Traffic Commission/Traffic Calming group and DPW for study; Councilor Garrino said she expects to return with more information in January. The subcommittee explicitly did not adopt a citywide expenditure on the night of the meeting; members asked staff to report back with the cost estimate and feasibility analysis before any implementation steps.
