Commissioners approve holiday community engagement plan with $37K–$38K estimated range

The Northampton County Board of Commissioners voted to proceed with a holiday community engagement initiative that includes a catered community dinner, countywide turkey or ham giveaways, partnerships with local food banks and Department of Social Services, care-package distributions to nursing and rehabilitation facilities, and limited recognition or events for first responders.
Commissioner Whitaker, who led the proposal, said the catered meal would be scheduled for early January (either Jan. 3 or Jan. 10) rather than in December to increase participation. The proposal included both decentralized giveaways at township locations and a centralized distribution through a food-bank partner.
Staff presented itemized estimates during the meeting: the catered dinner was estimated at about $7,500 for roughly 350 attendees; township allocations for turkeys/hams were estimated at $1,500–$2,000 per township, bringing countywide giveaway estimates to roughly $22,000; a centralized distribution in partnership with DSS was estimated at about $3,000; and an allocation for nursing-home care packages and caregiver items was estimated around $4,000. Combining those figures, staff presented an approximate total range of $37,500 to $38,500 for the program as discussed. Commissioners moved, seconded and approved proceeding with the proposal and asked staff to post a budget outline for public transparency.
Commissioners commended Whitaker for leading the initiative and discussed outreach strategies to increase turnout and access to the giveaways.
