The Alice Independent School District board on Nov. 17 approved the purchase of 480 Chromebooks at $266 apiece, a $127,680 procurement funded through federal Title IV-A dollars.
District staff said the devices will be allocated across six campuses based on campus needs and enrollment rather than strictly one-per-student distribution. "We will be dividing it based on campus needs and student enrollment," a presenter said during the motion. Staff told trustees that some cohorts—such as early college high school students—had been directed to keep district-issued devices on campus to reduce damage or loss.
The proposal noted the purchase is part of an ongoing device replacement strategy; staff said the technology team works to repair devices when possible but that many units are too damaged to be economically repaired. Trustees asked whether students would be permitted to take devices home; the superintendent said in many instances devices will go home but some programs will require devices remain on campus and be returned at the end of the school day.
The motion to approve the Chromebook purchase was moved, seconded and carried by the board.
