The Town of Kernersville Board of Aldermen adopted several organizational resolutions, approved a town attorney appointment and contract, and heard staff report the town has closed on a property on Smith Edwards Road.
Town attorney Ed Powell introduced the proposed employment agreement and said the contract in the packet was the same as last year. He stated details of the compensation: "...the compensation, for mister Powell for the 1 year beginning... will be a $160,000," and explained the contract’s effective date provisions as presented in the packet. The board appointed Ed Powell as town attorney by unanimous vote and subsequently approved the employment agreement by a separate unanimous vote.
The board also moved through multiple resolutions considered organizational in nature: meeting procedures (R-2025, numbering pending), the 2025 travel policy for mayor and board, appointments to standing boards and commissions, authorization for the town manager to enter into options to purchase real property, a resolution establishing procedures for photos and videos during meetings of public bodies, a code of ethics for the Board of Aldermen, and an electronic communications policy. The town attorney advised it would be preferable to vote on each resolution separately; the board did so and adopted each resolution by unanimous voice vote.
During staff reports, Mr. Swisher informed the board that the town closed on a parcel on Smith Edwards Road and that the former owners have until Dec. 20 to remove personal items. Board members briefly discussed whether that parcel could be used in the future to expand the existing mountain bike park, noting the current tract is hilly and largely built out; any expansion would likely require use of the newly acquired parcel and a future board decision.
The mayor and several aldermen offered brief closing remarks and the meeting adjourned by unanimous vote.
