Council asks MassDOT for 'Don't Block the Box' markings and signal adjustments to ease local gridlock

The council approved multiple traffic motions on Nov. 24 aimed at reducing local gridlock and improving safety. Councilor McKenna presented motions asking the mayor to request that MassDOT mark "Don't Block the Box" at the intersection of Crescent Avenue and Bennington Street and at VFW Parkway at Beach Street; she said the markings have been effective in other jurisdictions and on Revere Street.
McKenna argued such markings reduce the risk of collisions and ease school‑traffic backups, saying of the California practice, "These boxes do work, especially in California." The council also asked MassDOT to increase signal timing for westbound traffic on Winthrop Avenue to reduce backups to the intersection of Winthrop Ave and North Shore Road.
Separately, a motion asked the Department of Planning and Community Development to work with DCR, MassDOT and the traffic commission to reduce a crosswalk at Campbell Ave and Revere Beach Parkway so vehicles will be directed to turn right into the parkway, a change proponents said would reduce unsafe crossings and improve traffic flow. The council ordered these requests to be sent to the mayor and the relevant agencies.
