Ag teacher thanks Compeer Financial for grant; Rice Lake FFA cites record fair sales benefiting students

Pete Kolpak, the high school ag teacher and FFA advisor, addressed the board to thank Compeer Financial and named individuals involved in the application process after the district received a $4,000 ag-education/classroom equipment grant this spring.
"I applied for that this last April and, with Brad Kistling and ordered lights, and we're gonna be putting in a second bank of grow lights in the greenhouse area," Kolpak said, adding that the district has spent $2,565 of the grant on LED grow lights and will replace fluorescent lights in several lettuce towers. He said the greenhouse work will support spring plant sales and plans to grow additional vegetables and lettuce for the lunch program.
Kolpak also updated the board on the Berrien County Fair: "This year, we sold 96 animals, had a record breaking sale by about $60,000," he said, and estimated that Rice Lake students and recent graduates received about $134,000 of the sale proceeds. He thanked Compeer Financial and Doug Kuchko for their assistance with the grant and fair support.
