Community member Jason Rose addressed the Scottsdale Unified governing board on Nov. 20 with a proposal to develop an arts magnet at Echo Canyon, presenting fundraising pledges and a private‑sector plan meant to boost enrollment and generate revenue for the district.
Rose said his team and local partners would contribute initial funds and services: $50,000 toward a dedicated $100,000 marketing pool and $100,000 in in‑kind services, plus a promise to raise another $250,000 contingent on the district authorizing feasibility work. He argued Echo Canyon sits in a uniquely art‑rich ecosystem and could be reimagined to attract families and students to the district.
Board members and staff discussed next steps: the superintendent and district staff said a formal feasibility/due‑diligence process would be required and that private‑sector interest would be a factor if the board directed further study. Several board members and administrators said they support exploring such options but stressed that a clear demand study and data on expected enrollment capture would be required before the district commits resources.
The arts‑magnet pitch became part of a broader meeting conversation about whether to repurpose Pima and Echo Canyon campuses; the board has not committed to any specific repurposing plan at this time and scheduled a Dec. 9 decision on the repurposing proposal.
Jason Rose requested the board designate Echo Canyon as the preferred alternative for an arts magnet and to appoint a private advisory board; staff said they would need a board direction to begin due diligence and to consider bond timing if capital investment were needed.
