Plymouth Middle School students showcase leadership projects and perform musical selection at Robbinsdale board meeting

Plymouth Middle School student leaders and advisors appeared at the Robbinsdale Area School Board's Dec. 1 meeting to showcase work intended to boost student voice and school climate.
Lisa Raymond, AVID coordinator at Plymouth Middle School, said the principal's student-advisory team was created to promote leadership, improve school culture and give students opportunities to shape the school experience. "Students are at the heart of what we do," Raymond said, describing projects started last year and continued into this year.
Advisor Marina Day presented concrete examples: students have been naming hallways, running spirit weeks and organizing an anti-bullying campaign that prompted "153 students and staff" to sign a pledge. Four student leaders — Yuli Caballero, Camille Gallardo, Kate Floyd Sherguson and Ava Paquin — described what leadership means to them and how the group tries to make incoming sixth graders feel welcome.
The meeting also featured theater students introduced by Mina Johnson, the district's after-school theater coordinator. Three eighth-graders performed selections from Beauty and the Beast Junior; Johnson told the board the program this year involves about 110 participants, with 68 students in the cast and roughly 40 in the crew.
Board members praised the students and thanked staff for supporting the program. Chair Evans Becker invited students to meet after the presentation for a photograph and encouraged the public to attend upcoming performances.
