Kate Wallace was sworn in as the School Board member for District 3 at the start of the Nov. 18 meeting, placing her right hand on a Bible and repeating the oath administered by Pastor Tim Hatch.
Wallace offered prepared remarks highlighting her family's long ties to Polk County education and pledged to serve "all students, all parents, all educators," thanking Governor Ron DeSantis and local supporters who attended.
Superintendent Hyde then conducted the reorganization process for the board's officers under the procedures cited in his remarks. Justin Sharpless was elected chair after nominations and roll-call-style voice indications from members; Travis Keys was elected vice chair. The board approved a resolution to use Robert's Rules of Order for proceedings and set a recommendation to hold regular meetings on the fourth Tuesday of each month at 5 p.m. in the School Board Auditorium at the district offices in Bartow.
Board members congratulated the new chair, vice chair and Wallace on her appointment, and the meeting proceeded to recognitions and the action agenda.
