Gloria Dent elected board president; Dawn Pulliam elected vice president in split votes

The Anne Arundel County Board of Education on Dec. 3 elected Gloria Dent as board president and Dawn Pulliam as vice president following nominations and brief statements from candidates.
Dr. Tobin nominated Dent for president, citing her leadership and willingness to take tough votes. Dent accepted the nomination and told colleagues she intends to continue transparency and accountability. Member Shahan said she would vote "no" and explained her opposition: "My no vote boils down to communication and collaboration between myself and the current VP and nominee for board president," adding that she had been left out of conversations on board business.
The board then recorded vocal roll-call-style votes: seven members voted in favor and one voted against, electing Dent by a 7–1 margin.
For vice president, Miss McDermott nominated Dawn Pulliam and Miss Shahan nominated Erica McFarland. After brief remarks from both candidates, the board voted; Pulliam won 6–2 and was declared elected. The board recessed briefly after the elections.
Both new officers will serve as the board begins work on the FY2027 budget and other agenda items in the coming weeks.
