The Garner Town Council swore in newly elected members and completed routine organizational business at its Dec. 2 meeting.
Representative Abraham Jones of the North Carolina House of Representatives administered the oath for incoming members. One newly sworn council member said the focus of their term will be "affordability, accessibility and accountability," and urged partnership with residents, staff and local organizations.
Council member Elmo Vance moved that Council member Damien Dellinger be selected as mayor pro tem; the motion was seconded and Dellinger was elected by voice vote with no opposition recorded. Mayor Gupton described the pro tem role as important and noted the council used an internal communication-based process to select the officer.
The council also adopted a slate of appointments for three standing committees by voice vote. The slate presented by Mayor Gupton assigned members to human resources, law and finance, and public works committees.
During committee reports, Council member Phil Matthews announced an open Veterans Advisory Committee meeting at White Deer Park. Mayor Pro Tem Vance said the affordable housing task force will present recommendations for council consideration at the Dec. 16 meeting.
No formal policy votes or budget decisions were taken as part of the organizational actions; the council’s procedural motions were routine administrative business continuing the town’s transition following the election.
