Board approves assistant food services director as district seeks to expand meals and catering

The Schuylkill Valley board on Tuesday approved creation of an assistant director of food services and voted unanimously to fund the position from the food service fund, not the general fund.
Food‑service leader Louisa (presenter) told the board the department has expanded breakfast participation substantially this school year and is pursuing expanded scratch‑cooking, catering, and a district branding and catering guide to keep more food dollars inside the district. "We served 450 students meals" at the middle-school Thanksgiving event and, she reported, "approximately 19,000 breakfast meals" as of mid‑November; those participation figures were presented as the operational basis for the additional leadership role.
Louisa outlined responsibilities for the assistant director including training and technical support for staff, developing a marketing and catering plan, supporting summer athlete meal needs and filling in supervisory roles when needed. She told the board the new position’s cost will be borne by the food service fund and asserted sufficient net cash from increased subsidies to support the role without drawing on the general fund.
Board members praised the department's growth, and after a brief discussion approved the position by voice vote, 9–0.
