Committee tables turf decision after debate over usage, costs and environmental risks

Opponents and some committee members pressed for fuller accounting of long-term maintenance and environmental risk. One participant warned committee members to "ensure there's no lead, PFAS, phthalates or other plasticizers used" and raised concerns about microplastics entering nearby Forest River. Another committee member described replacement costs and the risk of voided warranties when maintenance is deferred.
Several members asked Perkins and Will and the OPM to return with specific lifecycle-cost comparisons, a clearer inventory of existing city fields and usage, and technical proposals for mitigating environmental and heat impacts if synthetic turf is selected. The committee formally tabled a turf decision for a later meeting and did not adopt a binding recommendation at this session.
