Board approves GoGuardian pilot for online program to curb cheating; limits set for trial

The Lyon County School Board unanimously authorized a pilot of the GoGuardian classroom‑monitoring platform, directing district staff to obtain a demo and a written quote and to return with implementation guidelines. The board capped the pilot licensing procurement at up to 250 student seats and a district cost not to exceed $3,000.

Lion Online staff and principals told the board the tool would be used selectively — for final exams, MAP testing windows and targeted students — in order to deter cheating and document off‑task scripted behavior. "Students run Edubot; it runs in the background and it actually answers all their questions for them," a Lion Online representative said when describing the kinds of automated scripts and tools teachers have observed.

District staff emphasized the pilot would be limited, accompanied by usage parameters and stakeholder notification. Trustees discussed price per license, the ability to recycle licenses across students, privacy safeguards (recording parameters, when and how the tool is enabled), and the administrative burden of scenes/rosters. Several trustees argued the cost was modest relative to overall technology spending.

The motion approved language for a pilot and asked administration to arrange a demo and return with a vendor quote and recommended policy guardrails for student privacy, use cases and parental notification. Board members requested a follow‑up report after the pilot with recommendations on expansion or termination.

The vote to authorize procurement and pilot parameters passed unanimously.
